L'isola di Ustica č situata a circa 52 km da Palermo ed č collegata tramite traghetto o aliscafo, la cittā e un delizioso e pittoresco borgo marinaro. Fu abitata dai Fenici, dai greci che le diedero il nome di Ossario a causa di un episodio storico, 6000 Cartaginesi furono deportati sull'isola e fatti morire di fame e stenti. Furono i Romani,in seguito , a cambiare il nome nell'attuale Ustica (ustum, bruciato) per il colore delle sue rocce di origine vulcanica. Fu occupata dai Saraceni e dai Normanni e infine dai Borbone che costruiro due torri di guardia che attualmente sono la sede di un museo. Per l' origine vulcanica , l'isola, č conosciuta anche come "la perla nera del Mediterraneo". Le limpide acque ricche di pesce e la bellezza delle coste e dell'habitat ha da sempre richiamato da tutto il mondo gli appassionati di sport subacquei. Le case del piccolo paese sono colorate e affrescate con murales di importanti artisti contemporanei, si possono effettuare delle interessanti escursioni e ammirare le bellezze dell'isola e per chi pratica l'apnea sono interessanti alcune zone richhe di reperti archeologici sottomarini. Ustica lsland situated 52 km north of Capo Gallo and linked to Palermo by regular ferry and hydrofoil service, Ustica is a delightfully picturesque little coastal town and holiday resort which shares its name with the island it self and the overlooks Santa Maria Bay and the small harbour. Once inhabited by Phoenicians, the Greeks named it Osteodes(ossuary), in memory of 6000 Carthaginians left to die of hunger there. The Romans took it and renamed it Ustica (ustum, burnt) for its black rock, but the island was also ruied by the Saracens, Normans and again by the Saracens (till the 18th century) when it was occupied by the Bourbons. This turtleshaped piece of land has volcanic origins and Monte Guardia dei Turchi (238 m) is its highest point. Dark petrified lava, mantiing part of Ustica and meriting it the name of "the black pearl of the Mediterranean",gives the island a wild appearance. Clear fish rich waters and beautiful sea beds make it a favourite haunt of underwater sports enthusiasts. The little town lies up tuff Falconara Hill and some picturesque houses are decorated with murals painted by famous contemporay artists. A late-antiquity necropolis with various burial chambers has been founcl here. The Santa Maria Tower is now the underwater archeology museum and houses many objects founcl during exploration of ancient wrecks and of the submerged city of Osteodes, a mile west of the island. Of the many Ustica excursions possibile we suggest visitors te sail round Ustica and see the beautiful caves such as Azzurra, Pastiza, Barche, Segreta and Verde. Te safeguard the environment, the Marine Nature Reserve of Ustica was set up in the town of Spalmatore: within it sboundaries,fishing,boating and mining have been banned.
