The name “Mediterraneo” comes from the Latin “Mediterraneus”, which means "in the middle of the lands". For the Roman people it was the "mare nostrum", which is known today as “ the Med sea” or “the Med”.. The main islands of the Mediterranean sea are : Cyprus, Crete, and Rhodes at east - Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica, and Malta in the centre - Majorca and Minorca at west. The states which overlook the Mediterranean sea are: Spain, France, Italy, Principality of Monaco, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia-Montenegro, Albania, Cyprus, Malta, Greece and Turkey on the Lebanese northern coast, the Palestinian Autonomous Authority, Syria and Israel at east, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco on the southern coast.
