THE PORT AUTHORITY TOOK PART TO THE MEETING ON LOGISTICS IN BARCELONA |
June 3rd - "The Port Authorities of Catania and Barcelona have started a collaboration project, which is supposed to give good results. As a matter of fact, the two metropolis have the same strong relationship between the city and the sea, therefore we are going to build up a virtual bridge, in order to obtain a mutual benefit". This is what Mr. Santo Castiglione, chairman of the Port Authority of Catania, said, coming back from the International Show on Logistics held in Barcelona from May 25th to 29th. The five Sicilian Authorities, Catania, Palermo, Messina, Trapani and Augusta have submitted an integrated logistic platform to offer a common and more competitive product, especially to the Northern Africa countries. A new communication project has been drawn out in order to promote the Sicilian territory and infrastructures. The aim of the project, coordinated by Mr. Roberto Nanfitò, administrative manager of Catania'''s Port Authority, is to implement a network in Sicily and among the Sicilian ports waiting for 2010, when a free exchange area is supposed to be opened in the Mediterranean sea. The marketing aspect of the territory, the real added value of the port, has been particularly treated. The five "Sicilian cousins" booth was one of the most visited one: a very big success. A lot of attachés have got in touch with them and asked for logistic spaces. Besides the chairman of the Port Authority of Catania, the Sicilian Authorities were represented by: Mr. Mario Chiofalo for Messina; Mr. Paolo Mercadante, secretary general, for Palermo; Mr. Emilio Baroncini, deputy commissioner, and Mr. Ignazio Agate, his vice, for Trapani. The chairman of the Port Authority, Mr. Giuseppe Spanò and Mr. Venerando Toscano, secretary general, represented Augusta. The Trading Manager of the Port Authority of Barcelona, Mr.Noberto Calabrò Di Giorno, has then received the Sicilian delegation. The chairman of Assoporti, Mr. Tommaso Affinita, took also part to the visit. "The guided tour inside the Barcelona Port -Mr. Castiglione said- has made me see how the waterfront opening, even without renouncing to the trading traffic, has allowed the city to become a big tourist landing and has made possible the opening on the sea of quarters previously considered as degraded. According to this model, the port of Catania, together with the Municipality, the Province and the Region, will be able to carry out a similar waterfront, which will change the face of our city, both from the landscape and the economic development point of view." During the visit to the capital of Catalonia, Mr. Ennio Bispuri, the Manager of the Italian Institute for Culture, received the delegation. This meeting has been particularly productive: an important cultural event, about the "Port-town" binomial, will take place in the next months, during the next International Show on Logistics. It has been a positive "expedition" for the Sicilian ports, who may be among the major protagonists of the next decades in the Mediterranean area, foreseeing the opening of the corridors between the Northern Africa countries and the widened European Community. An opportunity for the whole island development that we cannot miss. Gianni D'Anna (english translation by Antonella Pozzobon) |
